Hemp Grain As Bird Feed

There is an enormous amount of excitement and untapped potential surrounding the use of industrial hemp grain as a feed alternative for livestock. One of the reasons for this, is because of how valuable a source of nutrients and protein we know hemp grain to be. However, the U.S. hemp industry is waiting for agriculture officials to officially allow hemp grain to be used to feed cattle, poultry, swine, and other livestock. Not only will this open the floodgates for more production of hemp grain, but it may also increase the market price for a pound of hemp grain, which would greatly bolster the U.S. hemp industry. While we are waiting for that day, and hopefully it comes sooner rather than later, we can grow hemp for wild birds, as a birdseed ingredient, and for other wildlife to graze.

For many years, hemp grain has been a traditional ingredient in birdseed mixes. Industrial hemp grain is actually a nut that is high in fat, protein, and other nutrients, making it an incredibly attractive food option for wild birds.

Planting well-drained small acreages of certified industrial hemp as a feed and winter cover crop is a great way to add wildlife refuge areas to your farm habitat and ecosystem. This is also an excellent option for those who enjoy bird watching and hunting.

It’s worth noting, that you want to leave a walkable row between passes. Plus, if you intend to hunt it will require a good bird dog to roam through the hemp to retrieve bagged birds. It’s critical to check with all state and federal regulations as you will be required by law to register the growing area. Hemp is a birdseed crop that has minimal pesticide use. You will want to avoid continuous hemp production on the same land to avoid the build-up of pests.

For those who enjoy bird watching and bird hunting, we hope you’ll consider growing industrial hemp. Reach out to our team to learn more.
